The Chariton City Lakes contain Lake Ellis (1915/1916) and Lake Morris (1941/1942), that were once the water source for the City of Chariton, Iowa. Both lakes are no longer the water source for the City of Chariton but gives the opportunity for water recreation for our area. The city stopped using the water resources from both lakes in 2019.

Lake Morris is named after Lyle Morris of Derby, Iowa and Lake Ellis is named after Roy Ellis from Williamson, Iowa. Both young men died in action during World

War II. The naming of the lakes was a contest and Clara Ruthford won with the recommendation of naming the lakes after our two men who gave their lives in services for our country from Lucas County, Iowa.
