New City Manager Corey Goodenow was sworn in by Chariton City Clerk Ruth Ryun, Monday, August  22, 2011.  The Chariton City Council had voted unanimously to hire him at their regular council meeting on Monday, August 15, 2011.  He came from from Ankeny, along with his wife, Nicole, and his two year old daughter, Lila,  where he has been with the Iowa Office of Energy Independence.  He has also been serving as the City Treasurer for Cummings, Iowa.  He has a Master's Degree in Public Administration.   We extend our welcome to the Goodenow family as they make their new home in our community!


Officer Dustin Wickett, who is a member of the Chariton Police Department, recently graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy's 240th Basic Level 1 Training School.  Graduation ceremonies took place on August 5, 2011.  

Chariton Mayor Roger Manser swore in  new police officer  Dillon Lavely at the Chariton City Council meeting, Monday October 4, 2010.  Dillon is a native of Garden Grove, Iowa.  He graduated from Mormon Trail High School in 2006, then attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa majoring in Criminology.  He received his Bachelor Degree earlier this year.  

The Mayor proclaimed October 30, 2011, from 6:00 o'clock p.m. to 8:00 o'clock p.m., as Beggar's Night for Halloween in the City of Chariton, Iowa.

Chariton Mayor Roger Manser dedicated the former North Park to Halferty Park  in memory of Donald Lee Halferty at 11am, Saturday, May 29, 2010.  Halferty lost his life August 6, 1950 on the front lines in Korea.  He was with the 24th Rep. Co. Pipeline, 24th Infantry Division.  He was awarded posthumously the Purple Heart, January 15, 1951.   There was a large number of the Halferty family that attended along with City Manager Nels Christensen, Recreation Director John Peterson, Former Mayor Mary Stierwalt, who was instrumental in getting the park renamed in Halferty's memory, along with others.  Halferty grew in up in Chariton attending schools at Columbus, Franklin and Alma Clay.  He enlisted in the service at the age of 17 after persuading his parents to sign for him.  City properties that have been named in memory of others who lost their lives in action are Lake Morris, Lake Ellis and Bingham Park.  Mayor Manser expressed his apologies to the family for the length of time that it had taken to bestow this honor in memory of Halferty.   

At the January 4, 2010 Chariton City Council meeting, Roger Manser  was elected for a 2 year term as Mayor.  A  Mayor Pro Tem will be appointed at such time as the Mayor is not present to perform his duties.    New council members Dennis Bisgard and Raymond Meyer had been sworn in previously.  Council Member Ruth E. Smith fills the other council position.  City Manager, Nels Christensen, City Clerk Ruth Ryun and City Attorney Verle Norris were all reappointed to their respective positions.  

At their regular council meeting, Monday, August 17, 2009, new hours were set for a trial reopening of the City of Chariton Yard Waste Site.   The site had been closed due to illegal dumping.  The site will now be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Residents are reminded that the site is for yard waste only. No other dumping is allowed.   City residents may access the site during closed times by stopping by City Hall to pick up a key.  The council will revisit the issue if this option does not work.  

Mayor John Braida swore in Chariton police officer, John P. Shaver, at their July 6th meeting.  He has already begun his service as a patrol officer.

Chariton City Clerk Ruth Ryun has been awarded the specialized distinction of being an Iowa Certified Municipal Clerk.  The professional certification is awarded by the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association when a candidate completes the required education and hours of experience.

The Chariton City Council has passed a motion to approve civil engineering and surveying services by Garden & Associates for the rehabilitation of Albia Road from 5th Street to Highway 34.  Receiving funding from the government's new stimulus package seems favorable to cover the costs.  Work has been started on this project.  A portion of the newly paved road has now been opened to traffic.  

The Chariton City Council approved rate increase changes for the Chariton Cemetery as presented by the Chariton Cemetery Advisory Board. The cremation rate changes are as follows: $200 for a Chariton resident and $300 for a non-resident; $250 for a resident on Saturdays, $450 after 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays and for a non-resident $375 before 3:00 p.m. and $650 after 3:00 p.m. and to set the grave opening and closing fee for a child of two years or less being buried on a regular space to be $200.00 for a resident and $300.00 for a non-resident. 

The concrete pouring on the Auburn Avenue bridge has been completed.    This will allow for the bridge to be ready for use  sometime in the spring of 2009.   The contractor for the bridge is Herberger Construction.  Ideal Ready Mix supplied the concrete and Lucas County Engineer  Todde Folkerts,  along with others from the Lucas County Secondary Roads Department, were on site to test the concrete and make sure all specifications were followed.  The bridge is 153.1 ft in length and 37 feet wide.  City Manager Nels Christensen said that the Auburn Avenue bridge would be opened to traffic, July 10, 2009.  A special ceremony will be held at 3 pm.

Chariton Police Sgt. Jeff Johnson, has been appointed to the position of Chariton Chief of Police, by City Manager Nels Christensen,  as the result of Chief Jim Baker being appointed as the new Lucas County Sheriff.   Chief Johnson has been with the Chariton Police Department for 15 years.  

Chariton rural resident, Steve Rassler was present at  the Monday, October 1, 2007, city council meeting to give an update on his proposed $75,000 REAP grant.  The grant would be used to build an open air shelter along the Twin Lakes Trail on the west shore of Lake Ellis and would provide money for prairie restoration between Lake Ellis and Lake Morris.   Mr. Rassler was at the October 6, 2008 council meeting and presented to the Council the specifications for the prairie/savanna restoration work for the East Lakes project.  A hearing date of October 20, 2008 at 7:00 o’clock p.m. in the Council Chambers in City Hall, Chariton, Iowa, was set for a Public Hearing to be held on the specifications necessary for the bidding process to begin on the restoration work on the East Lakes project.  At their December 15, 2009 council meeting, the Council approved a bid for clearing the access  trail and the fire break in the East Lakes Project.  Steven Rassler is the coordinator of the East Lakes restoration project.   This stage of the work will be completed this winter.

   Vredenburg - Chariton Family Aquatic Center in Chariton ( Aquatic Center Project Pictures Project Pictures and Info)  Chariton's New aquatic center floor has cracked!    The City of Chariton reached a settlement with Larkin Aquatics and Irvinbilt Construction to repair the floor of the Vredenburg-Chariton Family Aquatic Center.  The floor will be rebuilt at the end of the 2006  swim season.   Monday, July 18, 2005, the Chariton City Council approved a request for proposals for engineering to design repairs to the Vredenburg-Chariton Family Aquatic Center.     The Aquatic Center  pool floor reconstruction is now completed.

The Chariton City Council, Chariton Park and Recreation Board, the Swimming Pool Committee, and the Chariton Recreation Department have put together and endorsed the list of items that they would like to see added to the new aquatic facility and Bingham Park if funds were available. Early planning discussions included some of these items in the pool design, but they were eliminated in order to trim overall project costs. See details.
